What does the Nigeria Immigration Service do?

It manages the entry or exit of persons in Nigeria, issues travel documents like the Nigerian passport to authentic Nigerians within and outside Nigeria, and also issues residence permits to foreigners in Nigeria. It enforces strict border surveillance and patrol.

How Was The Agency Established?

The Nigeria Immigration Service is one of the paramilitary agencies in Nigeria that was created to manage the nation’s immigration regulations. The Nigerian Immigration Service was extracted from the Nigeria Police in 1958 and was referred to as the Immigration Department.

On August 1, 1963, the Immigration Department was founded by an Act of Parliament (Cap 171, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria), and Alhaji Shehu Shagari served as its Minister of Internal Affairs (the position is now known as Minister of Interior). The Immigration Act of 1963 was later revised in 2014 and again in 2015, and this was the first law governing all immigration duties.

Now we’ll move on to the current salary scale for the Nigerian Immigration Service in the year 2023. Come along with me.

Nigeria Immigration Service Salary Structure

The Nigeria Immigration Service has other paramilitary colleagues such as the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigeria Correctional Service, Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, among others, with whom they share a similar salary scale, although their salary structure is slightly different from some.

The salary scales for Customs, Police, and the NSCDC are the same as those for the Nigeria Immigration due to the combined paramilitary salary structure (CONPASS).

In the Nigeria Immigration Service, the “Comptroller General” is the immigration service’s most senior officer, and the annual salary for the Comptroller General is up to N3 million, while the entry-level salary for passport inspectors might be as little as 30,000 Naira per month.

However, when one adds up all the various incentives and bonuses, the typical monthly salary for a Nigerian graduate working in immigration should be around N150,000.

To fully comprehend the NIS salary scale, we need to discuss it in relation to each CONPASS level.

The Service has a two-tiered rank structure, with the Inspectorate Cadre beginning at Level 3 and continuing to Level 7, and the Officer’s Cadre at levels 8 and higher.

A person is immediately placed on the Inspectorate Cadre if they apply for immigration with a credential that is less than a university degree or its equivalent.

Please be aware that some jobs or duties, like those performed by drivers, technicians, and cleaners, are strictly conducted by people who hold a professional tradesperson qualification. The inspectorate cadre is composed of those people. They are indispensable to the Service and can work without a college degree.

Similarly, everyone who joins the Service on demand and has a university degree or an equivalent is put on the Officer’s Cadre. They are at level 8.
