What You Should Know About Skill Up Nigeria

According to a statement released by Akindele Egbuwalo of the ministry, Skill-Up Nigeria represents the transformed and restructured version of N-Power, with a target of benefiting five million individuals over the next five years.

N-Power is a National Social Investment Programme launched by the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, in 2016 to address youth unemployment, alleviate poverty, and promote social development. The program caters to both unemployed graduates and non-graduates aged 18 to 35. Beneficiaries are engaged in government jobs for a two-year period, receiving a monthly stipend of 30,000 Naira.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, reported that a total of 960,000 individuals have benefited from N-Power since its inception. Most beneficiaries from N-Power 1.0 and N-Power 2.0 batches A and B have exited the program.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, responsible for overseeing the program, acknowledged irregularities and temporarily suspended N-Power nationwide. This decision was prompted by the discovery of issues such as beneficiaries whose contracts had ended in 2022 but were still expecting payments. Some beneficiaries were not reporting to their assigned duties yet continued to receive monthly payments. Others had found alternative employment but were still benefiting from the program’s payments.

Betta Edu has emphasized the need to investigate these discrepancies and highlighted cases where consultants were withholding beneficiaries’ funds without disbursing payments, even after their contracts had expired in March 2023 with no renewals.

Therefore, the introduction of Skill Up Nigeria is to reform the entire program and make it fulfil the purpose for which it was created in the first place – empower the youths by providing jobs.
